CHECKLIST FOR TELEMEDICINE/ VIRTUAL PRENATAL VISITS

This video demonstrates how to measure a fundal height on a pregnant patient. The purpose of this skill and what various measurements could indicate are also discussed.

Smart Mother's Guide Tips

Fetal heartbeat can be heard as early as 12 wks but definitely by 18 to 20 weeks. If you have a telephone virtual visit with your healthcare provider without documentation of your baby’s heartbeat, this does not meet the standard of medical care. Asking whether your baby is moving without benefit of knowing the heart beat in unacceptable.

The fundal height is obtained by using a tape measure and measures from the pubic hairline (you do not need to undress to do this measurement) to the top of the uterine fundus. This measurement is important, especially during the later second and third trimester to make sure the baby is growing properly. Please see this video for a demonstration.

You should always be able to take your blood pressure during a virtual/telehealth exam and if not, then discuss with your health provider other means of obtaining one, even if face to face.
